Cutting Energy Cords: Why You Should & How to Do It

INSIDE: As we go through life, we form energetic attachments to people and things. When those connections feel negative, cutting energy cords can restore us and make room for more positivity in our lives.

We form and show attachments, physical and emotional, in many different ways.

  • You listen to a lecture on meditation that resonates with you and decide to incorporate it into your routine.
  • You get a tattoo with a friend to remember a moment – a permanent representation of an attachment.
  • You date someone for a couple months, which naturally forms certain attachments.

Attachments bind you to people, ideas, and things. Energy actively shifts within you every time you experience an emotion related to these bonds. This phenomenon can actually be detected in the brain.

Shifts in emotional energy actually show up in the frequency size of brain waves. In Sanskritic yoga traditions, nadis – tubes or cords – run the length of our spine allowing positive and negative energy to flow through the chakra system.

Emotional attachments and energy flows symbolize the myriad ties that bind us. These ties are also known as etheric cords.

Each of us has millions of these cords – single strands, tight braids, or tangled clusters – connecting us to different traditions, ideologies, relationships, and materials.

What is Etheric Cord Cutting & Why Should You Do It?

Etheric cords can be positive or negative.

They can lace our energy with respect, excitement, courage, and power. When connected to like-minded people, passions, or adventures, positive energy gives us supported growth mindsets.

These cords can also shift energy into detrimental forms, like jealousy, obsession, or doubt. We frequently come into contact with negative things and people that ensnare us with unhealthy comparisons or habits.

No matter if your attachments are positive or negative, it’s always a good idea to cut our energy cords.

Etheric cord cutting can happen in many ways. The most common way is through an extensive meditation exercise.

With the help of visualizations and tools like crystals and stones, you can recognize and break free from what isn't serving you in positive living.

This process helps you focus on relationships and things that matter most to you and that positively energize you.

How to Know if You Have Cords That Need to Be Cut

Before you learn how to cut energy cords, you need to identify what cords sustain you or drain you.

Our seven main chakra points are great places to explore to check how we physically and mentally experience emotions. Chakras reverberate with our energy and influence our daily lives.

We especially experience emotions through our heart chakra and solar plexus chakra.

The first step in cutting energy cords requires you to take stock of what type of energy – negative or positive – you experience through different ties.

Through the experience of positive and negative energy, you can reevaluate, eliminate, or nourish your emotional bonds.

Negative Energy

Negative cords are easy to detect as we often experience physical symptoms of discomfort as a result of connections that don't feed our higher purpose.

In the solar plexus, negative cords give you that “pit in your stomach” feeling. You may experience physical sickness: nausea, indigestion, or loss of breath.

It's like opening the drawer full of your chargers or taking your headphones out of your pocket – somehow all of the electronic tendrils have tangled from being tousled or ignored.

From the solar plexus, this usually indicates tensions over power or ability. You feel threatened by the presence of someone in your life, or you compare yourself and your abilities to others when you are in certain places or communities.

As its name suggests, energy should energize, not exhaust you. When you feel heavy with negative emotions or sensations, take it as a sign to start cutting energy cords.

Positive Energy

It’s important to realize that this practice isn’t always about negative cords. We make so many connections in our lives that we can also become overloaded.

In the heart chakra, we can overflow with love, compassion, or spiritual partnership. We need to share our abundance.

Just as plants with wild branches extending in every direction sometimes need pruning to continue to grow, we need to tend our positive energy ties.

A cord may have nurtured an important part of our growth, but we need to trim its tight grip on our thoughts and identities in order to move forward in our lives. Often times, old cords naturally wither away or decay from your energetic exchanges without any conscious action from you.

We can cut energy cords that we have locked away for ourselves, sometimes selfishly, so that we extend these cords into other emotional bonds.

Cutting positive energy cords provides space for new experiences that can lead us down clearer paths on our spiritual journeys.

Smudge Sticks

How to Cut Energy Cords

When you know that an emotional bond no longer feeds your higher purpose, you can begin the process of etheric cord cutting.

Many people make cutting energy cords complicated, thinking they have to meditate for an hour or more to comb out the tangles. But honestly, since we are working with energy, it can be done in an instant. Although, most people enjoy a more in depth process.

You can cut energy cords through a few simple steps that we discuss below, focusing on negative energy cords. With the help of healers and counselors, you can learn more complex practices to go even deeper.

For now, this is a great place to start. In the sections that follow, we will focus on separating from negative energy cords.

Prepare Your Sanctuary Space

Choose a quiet space where you feel peaceful and can remain undisturbed throughout the process. This can be in your home or outside in a garden. You may want to smudge the area with sage to purify the space.

Some people enjoy the safety of a dark room that feels like a mother’s womb from which they'll emerge reborn. Others like to sit near a light source with positive warmth radiating waves over their body to strengthen their resolve.

Set out a yoga mat, blanket, towel, meditation cushion, or pillows to create a comfortable place to sit and focus. No fancy equipment is necessary – just use whatever helps you sit comfortably.

Place candles and crystals nearby. You can incorporate Feng Shui principles of the Bagua map in this space if you'd like. By placing crystals in the directions that correspond to parts of your life where negative energy has piled, you can better align your focus.

Clear Your Mind of Distractions

With your sanctuary built, sit comfortably within it. Dab a few drops of calming essential oil on your wrists or fabric.

Be mindful that scents can trigger memories. This can be helpful in this meditation but also can divert attention away from cords that really need to be snipped.

Close your eyes. Take time to thank yourself for setting aside time to reflect and clean. If you know any mantras, prayers, or affirmations that resonate with you, speak them out loud so that the vibrational sounds can attract the energy you seek.

Begin to Visualize

A key part of cutting energy cords involves visualizing these attachments. You may know exactly what emotional bonds you need to address. You might also need to explore the different energetic connections you have in your life.

Take time to recognize strong energy cords that keep you grounded, stable, and safe. Imagine these cords as tendrils growing along and into the floor of your sanctuary and anchoring you in the moment. These will keep you cognizant of the energy that still serves you.

Slowly and mindfully scan your body. At any particular point, do you feel a sensation that overcomes everything else in your mind? Make a mental note of this spot and complete your body scan.

Next, return to a spot that stirred discomfort. If you already know the bond that this pain connects to, visualize the cords that run from you to whatever it is – person, thing, or thought.

Otherwise, stop and think about what passes through your mind as you sit with this particular ache – whatever it is creates the emotional bond you need to cut. Imagine that cord.

What does the cord look like? Usually, negative energy cords appear like a tangled, dirty mess in our minds. Positive cords shine and create smooth, intersecting plaits.

Focus on the Cord

Now that you know what cords need to be cut, you may have to disentangle the strands of attachment from the useful energetic bonds.

In any relationship of energy exchange, we develop many ties and connections that feed different types of energy. If positive cords within this tangle still serve you, you might want to keep them intact.

When you find the cord that pulses negative between you and whatever entity you are bound to, imagine holding the cord in one hand. Tug the cord gently and visualize whatever or whoever it is at the other end becoming aware of your presence.

Acknowledge the source, and tell it that the connection has been important to you but that now you must detach from it if you are to grow.

Grasp in your other hand a tool to sever the cord. If it is an easy bond to cut, a simple set of scissors might do. If it is an unwieldy rope with many ties and knots, you might need a sharp knife, sword, or machete.

In your mind, cut the cord with one quick snip or a strong whack.

Emerge Lighter

Don't rush out of your meditation. After you have severed an energy cord, sit for a moment to let your end of the connection begin to heal.

Like a vein pumping blood, this energy cord may bleed out sad feelings within the space you are sitting. Give it time to coagulate and pass.

You may feel emotions rise during these final moments. Let yourself cry and grieve for the loss of the bond or for what you have lost in the time you were tied with the cord.

Brush your hands over the many positive energy cords you spread around you at the beginning. Let this bring the awareness that maybe you spent time in this relationship but you have now opened a new space for growth and goodness.

Take several deep breaths to replenish your positive energy. Speak any mantra or prayer if it feels right to you.

Most importantly, offer gratitude to yourself and any other guiding power that brought you to this meditation. Open your eyes, stretch your arms and legs, and slowly rise out of your sanctuary.

Rinse & Repeat

A great way to emerge after cutting energy cords is through a purification ritual.

This may mean taking a soothing bath full of essential oils and salts. It might mean spending time recharging and rebalancing your chakras in a full system meditation with crystals.

Also, remember that severing one cord doesn’t always detach you fully from an energy bond.

This is a process that can be repeated many times to make sure you feel fully free from the negative emotions and thoughts that the cords have fed you.

How to Use Crystals for Cutting Energy Cords

There are so many healing stones to choose from during any ritual meditation. If you have particular energy crystals that strongly resonate with you and help you feel protected, place them nearby or in your lap.

You can also choose crystals by color, noting what chakra you may have to focus on in your meditation and choosing a crystal that has a strong balancing force with that chakra.

Two crystals in particular – Selenite and Black Tourmaline – are very useful when learning how to cut energy cords. Let's look at them in more detail...

Selenite

This crystal emits a radiant white color. Made of calcium sulfate, it looks like a sword of ice or a diamond. It is especially useful for the crown chakra.

In our meditation above, Selenite can beckon clear thoughts and images in our mind so that we can truly visualize the cords we need to cut. Its milky white aura cleanses our sanctuary and protects the space from becoming overwhelmed by negative energy as we dig into our tangled cords.

You can also grasp a Selenite wand in your hand as your tool to cut your cords.

Black Tourmaline

In your meditation space, consider creating a circle of Black Tourmaline around your seat. This black stone of aluminum borosilicate is one of the supreme protective crystals.

During cord cutting, Black Tourmaline absorbs some of the negative energy from your cords that are permeating your space and thoughts. The magic of Black Tourmaline is that it can take negative energy, transform it into positive energy, and release the positive energy for you to absorb.

Black Tourmaline can even produce electric charges when heated. At the end of your meditation, hold it between your hands and rub them together for a sensation of positive energy flow.

Final Thoughts

Cutting energy cords helps you tap into your emotions and set aside time to acknowledge and experience your feelings. This is an important step in continuing to create healthy cords as you bond with new people and practices in your life.
