INSIDE: Combining different crystals can greatly enhance the healing energies of the stones, or it can neutralize them. Learn how to pair crystals properly right here!
Crystals are a powerful aid for unblocking our energy centers and creating the life we desire.
As published by PsychCentral, there is a correlation between our basic needs, needs for growth, and chakras.
That being said, because gemstones have an incredible impact on aligning the chakras and supporting growth, we may feel drawn to use more of them to achieve even greater alignment.
However, the question that many ask is, are there crystals that cancel each other out? Are there crystals that don’t work well together?
If these and similar questions are bugging you, this article is for you. Here's what you need to know about combining different crystals.
The Essentials of Combining Crystals
If you wonder whether you can use different crystals together, the answer is yes.
And it's a big yes.
Here's what you need to know...
Tune Into Your Emotions, Needs & Intuition
To choose the best crystal for you, you need to tune into your emotions, needs, and intuition.
Everything starts with setting a clear intention and tapping into our intuition to know which crystals we need.
What is it that you need the most? What kind of energetic support or healing would be the most beneficial to you?
Answering these questions will help you find the crystals that will work for you the most.
Our energy is changeable, and we evolve all the time. Healing stones will accompany us on this journey if we allow our intuition to lead us as to which stones we need at which times.
The general rule of thumb in choosing the right combination of crystals is to let the energy of the crystals draw you in and tell you what you need.
Choose Only 2-3 Crystals
Don’t use too many crystals at once because it can overwhelm you, especially if you are highly sensitive to energy and stimuli from the environment.
Instead of carrying a whole bunch of healing gemstones, choose two to three stones that resonate with you the most. That will help you get the best of each.
Having too many of them by your side at a given moment can dilute the energy and tone down the potency of each.
It's All About Energy
Combining crystals is powerful and can have incredible effects if we use them wisely and listen to our needs. The energy of crystals works to encourage energy flow, so it’s not focused on only one segment of our being or only one chakra.
Some gemstones work terrifically with others, while some tend to cancel each other out. This is because every crystal has its purpose and targets specific energy centers within our body.
Although each individual is different energetically, there are some general rules as to what combinations may not work the best together and why. Let's look at them now.
Are There Crystals That Should NOT Be Combined?
There aren't really any bad crystal pairings. There are just combinations that click with us and act incredibly potent, and those that don’t have such an effect.
We are all different, and while some people may feel a positive change within themselves when they use certain crystals, others may be more sensitive to frequencies and be more easily overwhelmed.
While one gemstone may work wonders for your friend, it may have a much milder effect on your aura.
This is because, although all crystals have healing powers, some may resonate with you better than others. The same applies when choosing the best combination for you.
Meditate on the crystals to find which ones you are the most drawn to. If the chosen combination feels right, you're on the right path to choosing the perfect pairing.
Crystals are inherently healing, and unless you are extremely sensitive to certain frequencies, they aren't likely to do you any harm, no matter if you use one or five different crystals.
Signs That Your Crystal Pairings Aren't Right For You
How do you know if a combination of crystals isn’t right for you?
Let's look at some symptoms to look out for if a pair of crystals or a few of them combined isn’t working for you as well as you would like them to.
You Don’t Feel Any Significant Change in Your Energy
Crystals never negate each other or work against us. What can happen, however, is that because each crystal has its own frequency, they can, in a sense, neutralize the power of one another.
This can result in you not feeling all of the benefits of one or the other, but only some.
You Feel Confused
Confusion is a product of using calming and energizing crystals at the same time.
For instance, if we combine crystals that awaken spontaneous childlike energy with those that help us gain discipline and stick to routines, we may get mixed energy. We may also drift from being very spontaneous one minute to incredibly disciplined the other.
Although when combined, crystals don’t tend to have a negative impact on us, they can simply be a misalignment with one another.
While this may work amazingly for some, others may find it difficult to balance two different energies.
You Feel Like You're Growing at a Pace You're Uncomfortable With
Crystals help us become the best version of ourselves. Because they stimulate growth on all levels and work to unblock chakras, when we use a few of them at once, sometimes this sudden wave of expansive energy can feel like a bit too much.
The best way to deal with this is to choose two crystals to help you with two key segments of growth and healing at a time.
For instance, you can use Amazonite to help you unblock the throat chakra, and support it with Tiger’s Eye, which will help you gain confidence and trust in your ability to express yourself with authenticity.
You Feel Low on Energy
It can be common to feel low on energy when we choose crystals that emphasize how we feel.
For example, Clear Quartz is a mighty healer and has the power to cleanse energy. However, it also amplifies our energy field, and when combined with a crystal such as Black Tourmaline or Lepidolite, which provide calming and grounding energy, it can make us feel a bit too calm.
These all help with depression and anxiety and when combined will work wonderfully to help us heal from fear and trauma.
If you find yourself feeling low in energy, but still like some other benefits of the crystals you use, try using only one at a time and see how that makes you feel.
You Feel Extremely Energized
Although rare, this can happen if you're a relatively upbeat person, and you choose two or more different crystals that boost energy levels.
You might not seek to become more energized and your motivation for choosing certain gemstones can be to boost self-confidence or inspire creativity.
Some crystals, like Carnelian, Citrine, and Pyrite work wonders to boost stamina and invigorate us, which can be a powerful healing combination for someone who struggles with chronic tiredness and fatigue.
For someone with normal energy levels, or naturally, upbeat people, however, this combination might not have the same healing effect.
So, can you use different crystals together? Yes, you absolutely can. The ultimate rule is to listen to yourself and your inner guide and how certain crystal combinations make you feel.
Crystals That Work Really Well Together
Crystals work with energy; therefore, we are naturally able to "sense" which ones are right for us. When we tune in to them, we will find pairing crystals to be an easy task.
There are certain combinations that work especially well, however. Let's look at them now...
Crystals That Belong to the Same Family
These are the crystals that come from the same group and have a similar nature.
For instance, Chalcedony crystals include Bloodstone, Carnelian, Jasper, and Onyx; therefore, combining them can help us get the best of each. Together, they are very potent and these are great stones for grounding, but also for self-confidence.
The same applies to other families. Combining Rose Quartz, Clear Quartz, and Amethyst, which all belong to the Quartz family, for example, can prove to be extremely helpful for practicing self-love and clearing the aura from negativity.
Crystals of Similar Colors or For the Same Chakra
Crystals of similar colors tend to resonate on similar frequencies. That's why combining Rose Quartz, Pink Opal and Rhodonite can do wonders to amplify your self-love.
All crystals correspond with one or more of the seven energy centers and can either calm overly active or stimulate under active chakras.
Here are crystals that work to align the chakras and do a terrific job at balancing us when combined. Feel free to combine two or more of them if they resonate with you.
- Root Chakra Stones - Red Jasper, Black Tourmaline, Garnet, Smoky Quartz, Black Obsidian, Goldstone, Black Jasper, or Black Onyx.
- Sacral Chakra Stones - Carnelian, Citrine, Tiger’s Eye, Bronzite, Goldstone, Tiger Jasper, Leopardskin Jasper
- Solar Plexus Chakra Stones - Pyrite, Yellow Jasper, Citrine, Yellow Quartz, Rutilated Quartz, Citrine, Tiger’s Eye
- Heart Chakra Stones - Green Jade, Rose Quartz, Amazonite, Lepidolite, Pink Opal, Rhodonite, Green Jasper

Crystals With the Same Purpose
Different crystals that correspond with one another help amplify each other’s properties.
For instance, if we want to boost self-esteem and embrace our authentic selves, we can use a combination of Tiger’s Eye, Carnelian, and Rhodonite.
All of these crystals have a complementary purpose, and that is to help us show up in the world authentically and confidently.
Here are some other powerful combinations.
- To reduce stress, worry, and anxiety, you can use Rose Quartz and Lepidolite.
- For reducing negative thoughts and energy, use Shungite and Black Tourmaline.
- For finding inspiration and motivation, use Citrine and Carnelian.
- To attract new love, use Rhodonite, Amazonite, and Chrysocolla.
- For self-love and to clear out trauma, use Lapis Lazuli and Rose Quartz.
- For mental clarity use Amethyst and Clear Quartz.
- For personal transformation, use Serpentine, Labradorite, and Amethyst.
- To boost drive and ambition, use Red Jasper and Tiger’s Eye.

Hi Sarah, essential oils can stain certain stones. Having said that, it is common practice to apply essential oils to stones. Usually, I suggest using oils on lava stones, which are perfect little diffusers.
I am making some earrings for a friend that suffers from chronic and persistent migraines. I have paired amythist in clear quartz and pink opal because I don’t have access to rose quartz. I have been reading that pink opal is overpowering and I’m wondering if these can be paired together and produce a similar impact that I’m looking for. I also wanted to know if annointing crystals with little bits of essential oils especially in this case I was going to use peppermint, if it would Damage the stones? I would take essential oil and put it on AQ tip and then gently rub it on the small stone of the earring.
